This piece was made in response to a comment made towards me by a student in a class I was assisting.
“I want to take you home, lock you in my basement and dress you like my Persian Princess!”
This comment caused me to step away and think about how I am perceived in the eyes of white Americans. Forever I will be an experience, a desert jewel, a spectacle. I can not exist simply as a person, I must serve as entertainment to them.
Using real American flags (which were aquired in the same way the colonists aquired this “new world”) and destroying them in order to intricately weave them into the flags.
